POETRY
by
Lael Johnson

One of my first large journals, a looseleaf paper notebook, was a collection of poetry that I liked. I still have my poetry notebooks. They are part of my writing history, even though I don’t have too many of my poems saved in them. I have some, but I was admiring other poets at the time, so I copied their poetry into my notebooks to learn and to appreciate their work. Copying a famous person’s work for writing practice is a very common technique, that is still taught today. It is one of the best ways to immerse yourself in someone else’s work and learn their techniques. It also helps you begin to think as the writer you want to become. You do start to notice details about writing that you might have missed had you not done that intensive work. It takes time and discipline but it’s worth it when you see your writing start to improve and your writing voice become stronger.
